Black Magic

Sarah introduced me to the Black Magic technique (stamp in white on dark cardstock and add colour using coloured pencils) and I was an instant fan. It is a lot of fun to do Black Magic cards and it is a very different look than when you stamp and colour on a light cardstock.

For my first Black Magic card I used one of my all time favourite Papetrey Ink stamp sets, Stitches and Swirls. I stamped the flowers using Hero Arts’ Unicorn white pigment ink and let the image dry really well before colouring the leaves and flowers using my PrismaColor pencils. For this card I coloured directly onto the black cardstock which is doable because PrismaColor pencils are wax-based.

For my second card I started by stamping and heat embossing the sentiment before I stamped the images using Clearly Besotted’s Dandelion Dreams. When stamping the stems of the dandelions I masked off parts of the flowers as well as the sentiments whereby I achieved some sense of depth in the stamping.

Here I coloured directly onto the stamped part of the card which gives a slightly different Black Magic effect than what I did on the first card. It only goes to show that Black Magic is a technique with many possibilities. I strongly encourage you to give the technique a whirl.

Monster god bedring

A few months ago Bertram injured his arm and I wanted to send him a little get-well-soon-card. I had just done a get-well-card for the Norwegian stamp magazine, Ett Trykk where I used Lawn Fawn’s Monster Mash and I liked the idea so much I used them again. I love the idea of wishing someone Monster much better health (works better in Danish than in English though). I heat embossed circles of various sizes on the black background just to give it some interest and then I build my scene on top of Neat and Tangled’s Sunburst stamp.

Since Bertram almost (but not entirely) broke his arm, I decided to have the little flying monster sport an almost broken arm. He is saying “Ouch! My arm” which is actually also a saying from Danish television’s most loved series, Matador.

The larger of the two monsters are then wishing that Bertram feels monster much better (again: just works so much better in Danish). Of course all three monsters were supplied with googly eyes – they just seem absolutely right for these cute monsters. For both of the speech bubbles I’ve used Papertrey Ink’s Bubble Talk Dies.

Wavy birthday card

One of the lessons of Online Card Classes Mask-erade was to mask off an area prior to using a stencil. This is actually a really neat idea because it makes it so much easier to fit in a sentiment on a stencilled card. For my card I used Create a Smile’s Waves Stencil and added a gradient of blues through the stencil.

I liked Kristina Werner’s idea of wrapping twine “around” the masked area so I did that too. I used Winnie & Walter’s The Big, The Bold and Party for the sentiment and the smaller of the sentiments was embossed using a red WOW embossing powder.

Tillykke Naja & Casper
