On Saturday Ask turned 5 and of course I had to send him a birthday card. Since I recently received a shipment of Clearly Besotteds Stamps, I wanted to try out the Ahoy Matey! set for Ask’s card. It is a really fun set for birthday cards and my only complaint is that it doesn’t include a “birthday girl” stamp only “birthday boy” – can’t girls be pirates too? I was inspired by a card by Stephanie Wincott for my card.
Since I am still working with the techniques from Online Card Classes’ Mask-erade, I did some masking using masking paper: I stated by stamping the masts and sails, the cut out masks for the sails before I did the ink blending that constitutes the sky.
The waves are made using a die from Clearly Besotted and I can see myself using it for many scenes using eg. Lawn Fawn or Create a Smile stamps. I underlined the water theme by randomly dropping some tiny glossy accent spots around the ship.
I liked that Stephanie Wincott had tied some twine around the card because it adds some dimension – so I did the same. Only I didn’t using baker’s twine but just plain read thread. I added Ask’s name using some stickers from my stash and kept those red as well – there’s something very pirate-y about the colour red.
